This version of my easy Fruity Jello Treat adds a cloud-like meringue topping for a beautiful, retro-inspired dessert that’s still affordable and fun to make. The lightly sweet meringue pairs perfectly with fruity Jello and fresh summer fruit — and kids will love watching the egg whites turn into a magical fluffy topping!
🕒 Prep Time: 20 minutes 🔥 Chill Time: 4-5 hours 🍽 Servings: 4 (1/2 cup each)
For the Jello Cups:
1 (3 oz) box of flavored gelatin (like strawberry or orange)
1 cup boiling water
1 cup cold water
1 cup chopped fruit (strawberries, peaches, grapes, or drained canned fruit cocktail)
For the Meringue:
2 egg whites
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 tsp cream of tartar (optional – helps stabilize the meringue)
1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional, for flavor)
Medium mixing bowl – to dissolve and mix the gelatin
Measuring cups – for water and chopped fruit
Whisk or spoon – to stir the gelatin
Small cups, jars, or dessert bowls – to pour and serve the Jello (4–6 depending on size)
Electric mixer or stand mixer – for whipping egg whites (hand whisk works, but it’s a workout!)
Small mixing bowl (glass or metal) – for beating egg whites (avoid plastic; it can affect meringue)
Measuring spoons – for sugar and cream of tartar
Rubber spatula or spoon – to scoop or spread meringue
Make the Jello Cups:
In a mixing bowl, pour in the flavored gelatin. Add 1 cup boiling water and stir for 2 minutes until fully dissolved.
Stir in 1 cup of cold water.
Divide chopped fruit evenly into 4 clear cups or jars. Pour the Jello mixture over the fruit to fill each cup.
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until firm.
Make the Meringue Topping:
In a clean mixing bowl, beat egg whites (and cream of tartar if using) on medium speed until soft peaks form.
Slowly add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, while beating on high speed. Continue until stiff, glossy peaks form. Mix in vanilla if desired.
Top and Serve
Once the Jello is set, spoon or pipe the meringue onto the cups.
For a fun twist, make rainbow layers by using different Jello flavors — just chill each layer before adding the next.
Want a shortcut? Store-bought marshmallow fluff makes a quick meringue-style topping, too!
Absolutely! These treats are delicious with or without meringue. You could also top them with whipped cream or yogurt.
If you’re concerned about raw eggs, you can use pasteurized egg whites (sold in cartons) or lightly toast the meringue with a kitchen torch to make it safer
Yes! Kids can help stir the Jello, add the fruit, and even help spoon on the meringue. Just make sure an adult handles the boiling water and any electric mixers.
They stay fresh for about 2–3 days in the refrigerator. Cover them with plastic wrap or lids if you're storing them.
